![]() I am trying to perfect my long splices in 7 x 19 wire rope. Everything goes great until I start to tuck the 12 strands. Sometimes they bury OK, but sometimes the "buried" strand wants to lay in between two of the outer strands, forming a seventh outer strand. Brian's book references the grommet for these steps, but that section talks about removing the heart strand as you bury a strand, and I do not think the heart strand is removed here (the heart strands butt together where the two ropes join). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

![]() Hi
In the grommet, the heart is replaced by the same strand that you make the grommet with. In a "perfect grommet," this strand completely replaces the core; in very large grommets, usually only enough core to allow adequate strand bury is removed. A wire long splice is kind of like the latter, except that you use (and bury part of) six strands in the process of making a splice. In both cases, there is no core sharing the space with the buried strands. Rather, they butt up against each other inside the rope. You can see a nice series of illustrations of this in Ashley's #2718. A long splice in wire is a high calling... Fair leads, Brion Toss |
