Long Splice in Wire Rope
 

I am trying to perfect my long splices in 7 x 19 wire rope. Everything goes great until I start to tuck the 12 strands. Sometimes they bury OK, but sometimes the "buried" strand wants to lay in between two of the outer strands, forming a seventh outer strand. Brian's book references the grommet for these steps, but that section talks about removing the heart strand as you bury a strand, and I do not think the heart strand is removed here (the heart strands butt together where the two ropes join). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

In the grommet, the heart is replaced by the same strand that you make the grommet with. In a "perfect grommet," this strand completely replaces the core; in very large grommets, usually only enough core to allow adequate strand bury is removed. A wire long splice is kind of like the latter, except that you use (and bury part of) six strands in the process of making a splice. In both cases, there is no core sharing the space with the buried strands. Rather, they butt up against each other inside the rope. You can see a nice series of illustrations of this in Ashley's #2718.
