Default Proper splice for Antal ring + Dyneema?

Hello,

I'm wondering what the proper splice is to capture an Antal ring in the eye of a dyneema splice. I was thinking the Mobius Brummel would work, but the trick is that except for very small diameter rings I cannot keep the splice tight enough to slip the ring into after making the brummel tuck, since the flares on the side of the ring are so "deep".

Is there a better splice for this material that can be used with these nifty devices?

Thanks!

There are several ways:
You can make the eye big enough to fit around the ring, then seize it with twine so it can't open again.
You can splice an eye and girth-hitch it to the ring, if there's clearance in the groove for two bits of Dyneema.
You can do either of the above with a spliced grommet.
If you have the far end of the Dyneema available, you can tightly brummel around the thimble.
You can do a standard bury-splice and lockstitch it. There are lockstitching directions on NE ropes and Samson websites.
I use fairleads like this all over my boat, and they're pretty great. I'm sure there's uses for them we haven't imagined yet.

Ben,

Great ideas. Not having the far end available (which is why I was thinking Mobius Brummel.. I should have clarified) I went ahead and just made the eye large enough to barely get it over the ring. It seems pretty well "on there" so I'll go ahead and seize it and figure it'll probably be fine.

So far the project (rigging a junk schooner) is going swimmingly!

Those Antal rings have such a deep groove for the line to go in, that once loaded I can't see them popping out. They're my favorite bits of boat jewelry since I discovered twelve-strand hollow braid and all it's manifold delights.

I should ask... where do you typically get yours, or is that not an appropriate question for this venue? I've had difficulty finding a consistent source that can ship in a timely fashion and sells wholesale.

Default West Marine

I buy them from West Marine, now that they carry Antal products. Before that, when just coming to our shores, I bought direct from Euro Marine Trading. But since EMT now distribute to West M., they no longer sell directly to the average Joe. I try to fenangle a Port Supply discount whenever possible. But even when paying full WM retail, they're far cheaper and stronger than the blocks I've replaced with them. Now the problem is what to do with my old blocks? It's never easy.....
