![]() I am trying to intrepret the standing rigging spec. for an O'Day 35. This has to do with the pin center length (PCL) measurements. The Manual reads the "PLC is from the bearing of ball and cup(s) to: Pin in turnbuckle with standard toggle or center of upset toggle 'U'. All PCL with turnbuckles at 2/3 open."
So I think what I am reading is the distance is from the base of the ball to the center of the standard toggle pin closest to the turnbuckle? For the life of me I can't find what an "upset toggle "U" is. Am I right on which pin they are talking about for the standard toggle and what would they be talking about for an "upset toggle "U". With an upset toggle the tang fits through the slot end [and the stay into the open end]. Useful if the tang is quite short. As for the measurement,stay measurement is usually from chainplate pin center to tang pin center or stay bearing points whichever is stipulated. Cheers ![]() |

On some boats of this vintage, the "U" end of the toggle was down, and connected to an eye-stud on the lower part of the turnbuckle. With this configuration, the chainplate would be a bail, not a lug. Which do you have? In any event, regardless of configuration, the sine qua non is the length overall, from the center of the tang pin to the center of the chainplate pin. Fair leads, Brion Toss |

![]() Thanks for responses. Relooked at boat. Top of all stays and shrouds are ball and stem fittings. The bottoms on port and starboard are Navtek u bolt chain plates. The stays are use an upset toggle with opening up to connect to an eye on the turnbuckle. So would those PLCs be from the intersection of the ball and stem to the center of the chain plate u or the center of the upset pin in top of the toggle. Fore and back stays have T stems on the turnbuckles with a u with opening down with upset pin through open end and tang. Would PLC be from the intersection of the ball and the stem to the T cross pin or to the upset toggle pin through the tang.

By our The-L.O.A-Is-Sacred reckoning, the measurement would be to the CL of the chainplate bar. That way you could deduct for different-length toggles when rerigging. But the original rigger might not have been that rational, so it were prudent to assume the longest, cut the wire accordingly, and then turn up the lower ends in place with mechanical terminals.
