Default Thimble Choice

I see two kinds of SS thimbles available ones that are open on one end and ones that are closed completely. Ronstan refers to the later as sailmaker's thimbles.

Sailmaker's thimbles: http://www.ronstan.us/marine5/product.asp?prodno=RF2180
Thimble: http://www.ronstan.us/marine5/product.asp?prodno=RF482

Is there a general usage difference for each of these?
Which one would be better suited for Amsteel to be used in my toppping lifts and running stays?

Thanks!
