![]() I have a 1983 Bristol 41.1 with a Metalmast installed with a Reefaway/stream stay in-mast furling system. I have only owned the boat for one season and have found this system unsatisfactory. It is difficult to operate, cannot be reefed, and the furling rod hangs out the back of the mast extrusion when under sail. I am considering my options for changing this system. One thought is to close up the back of the spar and install a Strong Track and the other option of course is to put a completely new rig in the boat which I may not have a big enough budget for. Does anyone have another idea or recommendation?

![]() Hello,
While I understand the attraction of converting to a conventional furling system, especially one involving Strong Track, you would likely be letting yourself in for a world of hurt to do it with this mast. First of all you'd be adding weight to an already heavy mast. Second, you'd be pouring a lot of money into labor to get the job done. And third you'd end up with an old mast that, despite the "upgrade", almost certainly has other problems. We are generally inclined to save and reuse old sticks, and very often we can do quite radical repairs that, while spendy, are far cheaper than a new mast, and perform as efficiently as a new mast. I doubt that this would be the case here. Fair leads, Brion Toss |
