Default Cordage

I'm looking for bulk three strand nylon cordage and I found a spool of Wellington at a pretty good price. Anybody know if Wellington manufactures good quality line. Thanks.

Eric

I've been trying to reply for some time now, but got delayed by a temporary inability to log in. I used 1/2" Wellington three-strand as dock lines on my last boat, and found it to stiffen up pretty quickly. It didn't seem any more prone to chafe than other three-strand, but tying knots in it became difficult because of the stiffness. And it would creak. Perhaps with time and much use it would supple-up again; I don't know. If it's for a critical, much used application (such as anchoring), I'd be inclined toward Samson (my favorite), New England Ropes, or some such higher-end brand. If it's for a warp to tow in a gale and maybe to throw out an extra anchor from time to time and maybe kedge off a mudbank here and there, it's probably fine.

Eric,

I've found it to hold true with most stuff, line not being an acception; you get what you pay for.

Cheap nylon line is not as good as expensive stuff.

Contact some wholesale guys for good prices on spools of NE or Sampson ropes. Port Supply has OK prices on spools. Check with Sailing Services in Miami - they sell at wholesale.

I've never heard of Wellington. You haven't either. That doesn't bode well.

Happy hauling,
Aaron N.
