Default Paid Bosun position aboard 1877 barque ELISSA

Hello All,

It has been awhile since I have posted on the forum. I became Director of the Texas Seaport Museum and the beautiful barque ELISSA a little over 16 months ago and it has been a very busy time. I would enjoy having the opportunity of passing along some traditional rigging skills and if any of you know of someone with some traditional rigging skills and background, please have them give me a call. As you all know, ELISSA is Brion's favorite square-rigger and his work on her over the years is much appreciated by all her crew.

Here is the announcement:

The National Historic Landmark vessel ELISSA is seeking a Bosun. ELISSA is a 3-masted barque built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland and sails annually in a series of spring sea-trials and day-sails. Occasionally there are longer voyages to ports along the Gulf coast.

Duties: The Bosun is responsible for implementing the preservation, conservation, interpretation, sailing operations and program development of the 1877 sailing vessel ELISSA, the 1937 shrimp boat SANTA MARIA, and several small craft. The Bosun supports the TSM volunteer program and supervises an extensive volunteer program that is involved in all facets of the museum’s operations under the direction of the Assistant Director. The Bosun also assists in maintenance and operation of the tour vessel SEAGULL II under the direction of the primary Captain of Seagull II. Assists in the planning and execution of special TSM events. This is a salaried, exempt position and eligible for full benefits.

Skills: This position requires a candidate with experience working in or maintaining traditional ship rigging. Duties should have included going aloft; rigging and handling sails; striking yards and topmasts to deck; working the capstan; striking and rigging blocks and running rigging; tensioning standing rigging; repairing and making new both running and standing rigging, using traditional marlinspike skills. The candidate must have made wire splices and wire seizings; fiber splices and seizings. Strong background in personnel management, materials management, and supervisory skills. Thorough working knowledge of traditional and restoration quality maintenance routines and materials, standard modern iron and steel preservation practices, standard modern wood preservation practices, shipyard procedures. Strong background in teaching maintenance and seamanship. Ability to work independently, as well as with colleagues, staff, a large group of volunteers and the general public. Good computer skills, especially regarding Microsoft Office programs.
