![]() 38 foot sloop with Pro-Furl roller-reefing jib: the material over-rode the Bead of the Luff Tape and is stuck in the foil about 3 feet up from the roller-drum. I got it up ok but can't get it down. Any one else ever have this problem? Any suggestions?

![]() I take you to mean that the sail cloth along the luff is doubled over in the luff groove, a pleat as it were ?
This should be able to be pulled back down with your body weight, or perhaps just having the sail out and pulling hard aft in this area will remove the 'pleat'. This happens often when hoisting a sail, and comes out easily, with perhaps 50lbs of force. Use force( or a knife, then call your sailmaker ....) but it will probably come out without damaging material.

![]() The worst I've ever had a luff tape jam, I was still able to pull it down by hand.
If yours is really stuck and you don't want to involve the sailmaker. Which would be pretty extreme I think. Maybe you could try stitching a loop of webbing onto the luff tape just below the jam and attaching a ring or block and run a line down to the tack. If you can't get it loose with a truckers hitch, then attach a block at the tack shackle and run it back to the mast and use a halyard winch. Hard to imagine it being stuck that badly though. |
