Default rerigging columbia 29

Hi, i want to change my inboard chainplates to outboard and add a second lower shroud while using spliced 7/19 316 wire.

Do you see anything wrong with this setup? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

David

I would spend the time, effort & money on upgrading the current rig rather than making the changes you describe. To move your chainplates out to the deck edge you'll probably have to build new uppers, and to add a second lower (assuming you only have one now - it's an 'in-line' lower?) you'll have to move the existing one either forward or aft. That's four new chainplates and two new uppers, possibly new spreaders, four new lowers - that's a hell of a lot of changes. As for the splicing, on a columbia 29 I think it would be rather out of place and so very much more expensive (either in your time or a professional's).

Have a rigger inspect your rig and walk you through your proposed changes - he/she may be able to point out more cost-efffective & performance enhancing changes that are not so drastic!

Best of luck.

Default rerigging c-29

I forgot to mention that i presently have old 3/32 wire and swages all around that needs changing; to small in my estimation. I might go to 1/4 instead of 7/32. my turnbuckles are 3/8 and I bought good used 1/2 ones already. The present lower is about 10" forward of the upper shroud and I plan to add the additional lower the same distance to the rear. Reason for doing this is the inboard chainplates are fastened to a 3/4 board taped to the hull and are buldging up the deck as there is a cross plate welded to the chainplate that presses to the underside of the deck. I have to work on the chainplates one way or another and adding a second lower would enhance the stability of the rig.

re: splicing. I'm to cheap to buy fittings. I figure that I can do one splice an evening. anyhow, this is a cruiser, not a racer.

I bought the boat a few months ago and really don't trust the rig the way it is.

what inspired me is i saw another 29 with outboard chainplates and it looked nice and traditional.

The present lower is about 12" forward of the upper shroud chainplate and I plan to add the additional lower chainplate the same distance to the rear. Reason for doing this is the inboard chainplates are fastened to a 3/4 board taped to the hull and are buldging up the deck as there is a cross plate welded to the chainplates that presses on the underside of the deck. I suspect that the deck is doing most of the holding and is why it is buldging up. I have to work on the chainplates one way or another and adding a second lower would enhance the stability of the rig.

re: splicing. I'm to cheap to buy mechanical fittings and i figure that the 316 wire will outlast any swage. I figure that I can do at least one splice an evening; there is no wife to complain so the time is open. I saw another boat with split pvc pipe around it's shrouds and chainplates so i'm thinking of doing the same to keep the splices covered.
