Default Rm?

you lost me there for a moment (I don't have a copy of Skeene) -- what is RM? and why would the beam be relevant?

RM is the righting moment, which varies depending on the angle of heel but is usually figured at 30? of heel. There is a graph on page 136 of Complete Apprentice which gives approximate righting moments at 30? for boats waterline lengths 20' to 50'. The beam is relevant as the base lever in this estimation; it would be the foot length aft of the mast for the sail, but we're figuring the athwartship maximum load which should be higher than any load from aft (unless you take a *really* tall wave...)
