Default Amsteel to StaySet halyard test

I spliced 1/8 inch Amsteel to 1/4 inch StaSet. This is a scale model of 3/16 Amsteel and 3/8 Double Braid. A few tricks were required to make it work but it worked really well. I tested it by tightening it between two winches about 4 feet apart. I cranked on my 46 power winch pretty hard and could twang a note higher than an open G guitar note as compared to a guitar tuner. The StaSet was about 10% thinner than it started out when under tension. No sign of any movement on the splice. I am guessing I was close to breaking strength on the StaSet. I can write it up if anyone is interested. I have not actually done it with the 3/16 & 3/8 lines but I would think it would be easier than splicing into 1/8 Amsteel.

Lovely, though "pretty hard" is not an engineering standard. If you'd like to make several samples, I could arrange to have them destruction-tested. Use New England rope, please, as they'll do the tests. A typical 35lb handle load on a #46 winch will get you about 1,600lbs, which might be only 50 to 60% the strength of the Spectra portion, or less, depending on the grade. What were the end terminations?

I pulled on it "a little harder" and it broke the StaSet probably right where it entered the winch.
I made a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrxrA-4hA30 I can't imagine it needing to be stronger than that. The winch is a Barient 22 so not as powerful as the one on my boat thus the struggling you see as I try and break it. This stuff sure is strong!

The termination on the Amsteel is a brummel splice and it is attached in this video to a padeye with a Soft Shackle that I made.

Unfortunately, I had neglected to put any whipping on the splice and it opened up a bit on the recoil, which I guess is understandable.

Amsteel is a Samson product so not sure about the test splices.

I finished the write up on the Amsteel to Sta Set halyard splice and have posted it on my web site. Brion, thanks for your encouragement and help.

The specific example I posted splices 1/8 inch Amsteel to 1/4 inch Sta-Set but this would scale to 3/16 inch Amsteel and 3/8 inch Sta-Set. It is easier to make in the larger size particularly using Brion's splicing wand.

I pulled a sample until the 1/4 inch Sta Set broke and have cycled another splice several times to over 1,000 pounds.
