Default Minimim Length Splice?

I have replaced the 1/8" wire halyards on my C&C Corvette with 5/16" Sta-Set X - a major improvement. The issue now is that the spice on the main halyard is about 8" long, and I don't have that room. The tail of the spice jams in the sheave before the halyard is taut, unless I drop the boom unacceptably low.
As a temporary fix I have cut away the splice and replaced it with an anchor bend, weakening the connection. Does anyone know how to properly terminate the line in a very short length?

Roger A Karmes.

What you need is a longer mast . If that's impractical, try just making a seized eye in the rope rather than a splice. I'ts only a little weaker if done correctly, and the bulge will be shorter than a splice.

How about a buntline hitch? It's compact, it won't come undone, and it preserves more of the strength of the line than most knots.

or the 'dingy knot'

I dont know where it is from, but we tie an '8' knot in the end of the line, stick a bight of the line through the cringle in the head of the sail, then the '8' through the bight, sinch up and hoist. This does impart some twist on the masthead, but gives the ability to put the middle of the cringle at the top of the sheave in mast.

that said, if you had 1/8" wire, why not change the halyard for 5/32" spectra, whose splice will fit fine, and just have a 5/16" tail spliced on for hoisting. Then you will be strong and fit.

And perhaps throwing in a Half-hitch in the end, then seizing it, gets one a bump
in strength & security, as that structure will take off some of the load put into the
seizing!?
