![]() The manufacturer (Hayn) has told me:
"The Hi-MOD fitting should be “hand tightened” fully and then proceed to apply a 1/2" rotation with a wrench for the appropriate fit. It is possible to gall the threads if over tightened." So how do I know if my hand tightening is enough before adding the extra 1/2" rotation? And is that really 1/2"? one half inch? Where is that measured? Or is it 1/2 rotation? |

![]() Hello,
Relax. Hayn's are actually simple and robust enough that they can get away with vague language like that, unlike the maker of another terminal who said -- and I am not making this up -- that they left the instructions for their terminals incomplete because they didn't want to discourage people from using them. So make sure that strands are well-seated inside the cylinder. I try to pull them apart, to accomplish this. Then screw the other half on, and run it down by hand until you meet with a wall of resistance. Then put a tool on it and add that 1/2" or so. Not a half-turn, definitely; probably less than a quarter-turn. Oh, and generous application of Loctite will help prevent galling. Loctite! It's a Glue! And it's Also a Lubricant! Fair leads, Brion Toss |

![]() Just starting to replace the rigging on my Flicka and happened to see this thread.
Hayn specifies Loctite 262 for the HI-Mods. Could not find it locally so checked the Web and noticed word like "permanent". I was especially impressed with the video using high heat and a large wrench to loosen a bolt. Most of what I've read concerns reducing the chance of galling with some mention of locking the threads. I would like to periodically inspect the fittings but the thought of having to some kind of heat source on the boat is not appealing. Some I have spoken to have used the lower strength blue Loctite. Any comments / thoughts / knowledge is greatly appreciated. |

![]() I used the Blue Loc Tite. Lots of it! But I have not yet tried inspecting one after more than a minute of tightening it down.
