Default removing wire from swageless fitting

Hi all:

I am hoping to re-use a swageless fitting. Apparently they are re-usable so why not? I know I will need new internal parts.

ANyway, ... the wire is jammed into the socket. Does anyone know a good way to remove the wire without damaging any threads?

thanks

The Violin

depends on the kind of fitting... and where it is (furlex furlers are much differnet than backstay insulators, for instance). there are many tricks - and I ain't giving them all out at once.

So what you got?

The best way to get the wire out is to cut the wire as short as you can at the fitting. Then unscrew the fitting a couple of turns,(it helps to have it in a vise). Then find a punch that would be a little smaller than the wire size. With the fitting in the vise knock the wire/cone into the fitting. Once it is loose open the fitting all the way. Then the wire/cone should push right out. Make sure you get new cones(they are sized by the wire size). You can't reuse the old cones. A little clean up, then your ready to reassemble the fitting.

Default Re-using cones and formers ?

On Sta-loks and Norseman, swageless, what is wrong with re-using the cones and formers ?

My Sta-loks came with ss cones and formers, and when I re-use them, I am not able to visually detect any damage to them, that would require replacement.

So, what is the damage to them, that require replacement ?

I have seen cones in older Sta-Loks , made of brass or bronze, and these were deformed or dented where the ss wire was crushed against them, and these I would replace.

Does anyone have photos of failed Sta-loks, or Norseman fittings, that they could share on this forum ?

you can't really post photos to this fourm, unless you host them elsewhere then link. big pain for no real gain

The cones of these terminals get indentations from the cable, and also probably get fatigued. sometimes they are cracked when you take the fitting apart...

The rule is to not reuse them, they are only like $5 a piece, so don't re use them. Really you probably could if they are fine, but why at $5?

the former doesn't need to be replaced unless it is corroded, in which case the whole fitting may be suspect.
