Default Sta-set X Splice

Hello all.
I completed my first eyesplice in sta-set X, and somehow I messed up the easiest splice to do. I was looking at the archives on the subject and found some help there.

The finished splice had the core sink in nicely but the cover got hung up, This also leaves the cover below the eye a bit loose. I believe this was due to a bad masking job. My halyard was a little on the short side so I would like to keep it as is for now. Until I can get some spare pieces to practice on before I cut the first splice off and to it again.
My question is:
Since all the strength is in the core, and it seemed to bury fine, would it be ok to use sail repair twine and serve the 3/4 inch exposed core in the eye.
After serving I was going to weather proof the serving and core with some liquid tape.
Suggestions welcome.
