Got to raise a mast step

Here's the story:

Pearson 10M 33', 12,500lbs
Alum spar 5"x9" oval
Fabricated steel mast step
Sits in bilge water, aluminum corrodes.
Plan is to build a 'platform' for the mast step approx 2.25"...

Compression fittings

I've used StaLok, Norseman, and Hayn. My personal favorite is StaLok, I like the separate former. Seems to make the turning of the strands more uniform. I've also had galling problems with Norseman....

I've tried endless (no pun intended, well I guess a little bit) varieties of tapering, burying, whipping and nothing gets the join anywhere close to the original diameter. I can get pretty close...

I'm guessing that it's because Johnson, which made the rope kindly fittings specifies Amsteel. I've done about a dozen over that last couple of years and they seem to work quite well.

You might just want to middle the sheet and put in two brummels (as if splicing a 12 strand). I've done that for jib sheets and it seems to be the most snag free.

I believe that it would be called a strop. I made a couple from 3/16" Spectra and will try them out on Wednesday evening races.

Will let you know how they work out. Gonna call them 'Davestrops'....
