Default End-to-end splice

I want to lengthen my main sheet. When I replaced the old, I measured the original sheet, assuming it was the right length. Dumb move.
It's 1/2" Sta-set, over-sized for a good grip. I figure to add a length of 3/8" to it, in part to limit the thickness of the splice so it clears the block OK. The tension on it with on a downwind run shouldn't be so great.
I've read about sewn splices. I've been racking my brain to figure out a way to tuck the cores and covers that won't pull apart, or add too much thickness. Even wondered if there was a way to braid the 2 cores together after tapering them.
Is there a way to do this? Or should I just stitch the two ends together?
Thanks for any help.
