Default all things old are new again

A new thread, spawned by an old one... i'd like to read some discussion regarding lanyards & deadeyes vs. turnbuckles for cruising craft.
The weight advantages are obvious for racing craft, as is the adjustability for synthetic fibre rigs. Personally, i just like the way they look, whether traditional or modern. Are there good reasons why i shouldn't look hard at using new modern deadeyes & lanyards to replace the dubious old turnbuckles on my boat?
The same goes for synthetic fibre rigs. Are we really at the point where such shrouds can seriously be considered for cruising boats? i really like the idea of carrying a spool of "rigging line" and a few deadeyes for spares rather than a coil of wire and bucket of bulky turnbuckles. i already trust my own fibre splices far better than my wire ones.
