its okay to not have a 'fair lead' if by that you mean that the attachment points of each end do not lie along an arc of the circle made by moving the boom attachment point of the gybeasy.

as long as the movement of the boom puts a bit of slack into the control line things will be okay.

to answer your question directly, it is okay to attach the gybe easy to the CHAINPLATE PIN HOLE of the aft lower shroud (deck inter on your boat?) by replacing that pin with a shackle of suitable size. probably not the best to attach it directly the shroud midway up however....
