Life expectancy of Dyform rigging
 

I've just bought a 6 year old 38 foot racer/cruiser. The boat has dyform standing rigging - swept spreader fractional rig. The boat has led a (relatively) easy life - 1 Sydney Hobart and a moderate amount of windward leeward racing and some cruising. She hasn't been flogged and she's been well looked after.

I had the rigging surveyed and the gent who did the job suggested that 6 years was enough for the dyform, even though there are no broken strands, deformed swages or any other symptoms of deterioration or abuse. I think he feels that 6 years for a racer is about as much time as he's willing to let his reputation stretch. He did find some other things that we will fix - a cracked gooseneck fitting, hardened and worn leathers at the spreaders, a damaged spectacle from user abuse, etc.

Are there any rules of thumb for Dyform rig life expectancy? If the rig needs replacing we'll replace it but if it is likely to be safe and useable for 3-5 more years then I'd rather replace it then.

By the way, My insurer says that they're happy with a 10 year life for Dyform on this partcular boat.

Any advice or info, but most particularly a word of wisdom from Brion, will be most welcome.
