Re-rigging Topping Lift

Hi all

I am re-rigging my topping lift on my Bristol 35.5 to be fixed at the masthead with the adjustment at the boom end. This frees up a sheave for a working halyard in addition to the main. I would like to use a low-friction ring at the end of the topping lift instead of a block, say an Antal 20mm low friction ring or a Harken equivalent. Simpler is better and with the limited adjustment under load necessary for the topping lift, seems that this is a simpler solution that can be spliced to the end of the line. I anticipate a 3-4 foot section between the boom and the ring (fixed on one side, up through the ring and back to a cheek block finishing forward).

Any reason not to use such a set up?

Thanks

Dan

It's fine

While I prefer a topping lift that's adjustable from the mast, rather than being quite often out of reach on the boom end, the setup you describe would work just fine. I have Antal rings in lots of places.

Thanks. I would run it forward to the mast, or near it in any event. Keeping it on the same side as the reefing lines, lets me use the boom mounted winch if necessary and keeps all work to reef on on side of the boom. Unfortunately, it is a bit cluttered on that side.
