Chainplate Corrosion Pitting Photo
 

Im pulling all my chainplates for inspection and re-bedding. I've pulled two so far and both exhibit this pitting below where they pass through the deck, near the first through bolt. Is this cause for replacement, or would I proceed to further testing? Thanks.

Hi Ben,

I wouldn't trust that without having it carefully X-rayed and examined by a competent surveyor. Even then I'd be thinking, "How long till crevice corrosion begins in those crevices?" and if I knew that that boat had been in the tropics, I'd just play it safe and get new ones. Every year I have to bite the bullet and replace something expensive on my boat. Every year I don't regret having done so.

I wouldn't trust those regardless of what the x-rays came back with. The pitting provides areas for more corrosion. This is why electropolishing stainless is done. Not just for the nice polish, but it also greatly inhibits corrosion.

That chainplate is about to break. Testing it further would be like checking the "Titanic" for more iceberg damage. The corrosion you see runs right through the chainplate. Jeez, that is gone.
