316SS Rigging

Other than the increased corrosion performance of 316 SS are there any othe pro's/con's to using in for standing rigging?
Thanks,
Jeff

316 vs 304

Ahoy Calypso , Good Question on 1 X 19 SS rigging wire choices .

Back in circa 1980's Brion gave a one night talk on rigging and rig failures , at the Santa Cruz West Marine store .

His display / example box of broken and questionable SS rigging bits and pieces , gave a heap of evidence of poor quality SS and poor SS design application choices .

I left that talk with a bit of Brion's advice that has proved to be excellent .

His advice was , whenever possible, build in a reserve of neglect ,,, and I would think a choice of 316 fits a reserve of neglect .

Some say , but 304 rates stronger , but others say 316 will cyclically work harden stronger in time .

Nostalgia

Hi,
Dang, I remember that talk. Long ago, but I must sat that my advice has held up. The only news since then is that it is possible to get 316 with a breaking strength at or near the rated strength of 302/304, so there's really no serious choice; you can get a reserve of strength, and of corrosion-resistance. I use the wire that Sailing Services sells. You can get it from them, or from me.
Fair leads,
Brion Toss
