Spar Length
 

So we need a new boom. The sail foot is 14' although it measures 13'10'' because of how it's cut. How long should the spar be? Should it be at least 14'? Wanting an out haul as well.

It would be good to have at least a foot more spar length than sail foot length; tackle and terminal take up room, and you don't want to crowd things, particularly on outhauls, where the tight space often causes foul leads.
Is this a Bermudian boat? If so, just be sure that the boom can't foul the backstay, regardless of vertical boom angle.

So I'll ask the dumb one. How long is (was) the old boom?

So the old boom was 14'2". Not enough room for an out haul and had a single attachment point. This is where it broke. We went from a footed to a loose foot on the sail and that in a moderate wind was too much for the old boom. the boat is a Yorktown 33 and the new sail was made by Mauri. Thank you for a quick response and if more info is needed let me know.
