Hayn Pin Sizes
 

Now that he Holidays are over I can get back to rigging.

I want to use the Hayn fittings but my entire rig is specked out for 7/16 turnbuckles and Pins.
Hayn does make 7/16 Turnbuckles however---the eyes come in 7/16 pins but the Forks do not.
I can not get a Hayn Fork with a 7/16 Pin.

This makes no sense to me because all rigs use combinations of forks and eyes so I see no logic to forcing someone to use all 7/16 pins except for the forks.

The Chain plates are bored for 7/16 pins and I do not want to put a 3/8 pin into a 7/16 hole.

I guess I could bush the chain plate but that makes no sense either.

So----the question really is---- Can I "Safely" bore out the Fork from 3/8 to 7/16.

Which is worse---losing the size of the pin or losing the meat from the fork.

I have spoken to Hayn about this and they said that they would have an answer for me "tomorrow." That was a month ago and as yet nothing from them.

Ideas and dialogue would be welcome. Thanks

This is actually an antique problem, one that I've never gotten a satisfactory answer to -- and not peculiar to Hayn. Apparently forks are somehow meant to be stronger than eyes. Boring out is possible only if the remaining meat is sufficient to meet standards. I will be on the horn with Hayn tomorrow for cross-sections. Wish me luck.
So are you putting the forks onto turnbuckle eyes? If not, what is the configuration?

The rig has only 4 forks----They are used on the short "Y" from the back stay to the aft chain plates.

I have a single back stay--that runs to a diamond plate. At this point splits into two short legs(approx. 6 ft .) which run to a chain plate port and starboard. There is a fork at each end of these 6 ft legs.

The forks attach each of these legs to the chain plate and to the diamond plate.

I would gladly incorporate a 7/16 toggle into the set up but I still have the same problem of attaching the fork to the toggle.

The Hayn Catalogue gives "most" of the measurements of the fittings but unfortunately not the measurements I need to tell me if there is enough meat to bore.

Why do they do this sort of thing--it complicates something very simple.

Funny though---I have a few "old tomes" on my bookshelf that state "the fork is WEAKER than the eye." I prefer to agree with you.

Please let me know the wire diameter and strand configuration that you are using so that we can do a stress analysis on the forks drilled out to 7/16". Because we manufacture all our products in-house we could provide a fork machined to your wire and load requirements.

Also Hayn now has Bronze and Chrome plated 7/16" Open Body Turnbuckles for sale.

I am using 7/32 1x19 316 wire- I prefer a left hand lay.
