Naked Brummel or McDonald Brummel
 

Ok I have some questions about the McDonald Brummel
McDonald Brummel vs. a Naked Brummel. Why would one use the McDonald when a Naked Brummell is so easy the a splicing tool?

Also, why does the McDonald Brummel require so many loop? It seems the knot is locked in by a single Brummel pass. What is the issue with using less than 4 loops?

In the McDonald Brummel, why make the "eye" In the line to pass the line eye through? It seems that the line eye could just pass through the line.

Before this post, I did make a McDonald Brummel and using fid and a line to draw the eye through the tail was a quick technique

Hello,
First, a McDonald Brummel is a specific way of making a locked Brummel by using just one end. If you have access to both ends, then the knot is easy, but in many applications the other end is unavailable, or too much bother to use.
The McDonald Brummel also allows you to make multiple locked Brummels. You would do this if a line was unspliceable, due to toughness and/or the absence of suitable tools. Done correctly, you get about 75% efficiency.
Other than that, I don't know what you mean by drawing the eye through the tail.

Concerning the comment on the last post;

I used a piece of 3mm line to pull the eye of the splice in step 3 (p68 working with rope)

Last what is the efficiency of the Naked Brummel?

Hi again,
Got it. Multiple Brummels, done correctly, give you about 75% efficiency. A single Brummel, in combination with a nice, tapered bury, is at or around 100%. It's also tidier. A tapered bury, with a lot of stitching, sans Brummel, is the same efficiency.
