Wire to rope splice, advice required.....
Hello collective fonts.
Need some advice.. having trouble with the wires' core pushing out between the tucked bundles. This was an intermittent problem on 10mm - 5mm wire / 12mm - 6mm, the 'normal' combinations!? But today was given 12mm to 5mm wire, and despite all my best efforts to have all rope bundles having the same number of yarns, the same tension on all bundles the core 'yarns' on the wire still lifted through.. In all other respects the splice looks great except this... How frustrating:confused::mad: So i'm picking that there is obviously something wrong with my technique... need some pointers. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance |
Oh, dear
Hello,
This is a classic problem, rooted in expansion of the wire's surface yarns, which causes them to shorten relative to the core. There are two basic ways to minimize this effect: to get the wire as close to half the rope diameter as possible (with the wire diameter being about half the rope diameter); and by cutting the core, at the start, back to near the beginning of the splice. It sounds like you are presented with relative sizes that have too-fat rope. What this translates to is too-strong rope, so consider beginning the cover and core tapers before tucking. You'll need to whip down the loose cover yarns when you are done. Other details are in the "Apprentice". Do you have a copy? Fair leads, Brion Toss |
Sorry for the delayed reply. Thanks for the great advice.
Just to be clear on the cutting of the core; you mean when i taper the wire i should cut the core out at the start point of the wire taper, so the tapered part of the wire has no core...correct? And of course i have the apprentice, who wouldn't own 'the bible'. :D Thanks Brion, appreciate the help. (It's great to be able to access a pool of fellow rigging minds. great forum) |
