EPIRB frequency change effective 2009

Quote:

The US Coast Guard issued a press release reminding mariners that
older model Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) that
broadcast on 121.5 MHz or 243 MHz will not be monitored by satellite
as of February 1, 2009. Effective that date, the satellites will only
monitor for radio beacons broadcasting on 406 MHz. Some of the newer
EPIRBs are equipped with embedded GPS, which will automatically signal
the location of the distress. (4/18/08).
FWIW. Saw this on the Sea Scout forum and thought it should be posted here as well.
Astounding lack of information on the WEB re this change, but apparently the incidence
of "false alarms" is less than half with the 406mHz system, location time is <5min and
location ambivalence is resolved at first pass, plus the signal (5w pulse, vs 1w ), being digital, now can encode
ship/aircraft/owner registration and contact info.

PITA to go get another piece of equipment, but it would seem that the change will be
golden for those who need the help! The older units (as of now) will have no useful purpose
and should be recycled if possible.
