So here is a new game -
What brand of furler did this ?
Lets see your halyard wrap carnage - and make us guess whodunit! (yes, I have more) |
What furler did this?
Brian,
Since my first topic with spartalk was regarding furlers, I will stick around and see how this game plays out. Wonder if it was the furler or the installation? Bob |
So here is the game
I have a friend with a Downeast 38 who recently removed his staysail furler.
I am not sure of the brand but it looked first generation. It is designed to be used with hank on sails. He offered the furler at no cost, and I would be able to use my old hank on sails, but I didn't like the idea that the whole forestay was dependent on the integrity of the swivel unit. At least if something goes wrong with the modern designs, you still have a forestay holding the rig up. Possibly it was one of these type of furlers that did the halyard in? Bob |
This damage is most certainly caused by an incorrect installation. My challenege is to see if anyone can identify which brand fails which way. (or if I can possible guess when someone else posts a photo)
Not an easy game, maybe not possibly, but there a few clues in that photo... |
definately an installation issue... so lets start by a process of elimination, lets exclude furlex, as the stay is (should) almost completely enclosed by the foil and the silencing tube. And if you guys have come across the kiwi brand 'reefrite', it shouldn't be one of them as it has a long swage at the top which the top bushing rides on.
any more ideas?? |
Puzzler?
Hi all,
How about using this to revive the Puzzler? It's been a long time since we gave away a Fabulous Prize. Interested? Fair leads, Brion Toss |
game on !
its a puzzler for sure. but maybe not fair. I suppose on clue is to look carefully at the cable below the damage. only a few types of furlers leave that marking...
|
Mine's no puzzle, but I think it's got you beat in the ugly category. http://bp0.blogger.com/_ifoPhvg9GMo/...h/IMG_1666.JPG |
dang K, thats fierce ! But where is the infamos 'halyard puck' that was supposed to be there ? (oops, scroll right, big photo ! )
I got some to equal, but not with the halyard still there. Amazing the stay stayed connected ! here is another photo of the 'puzzler' wrap showing more clearly the chacteristic marks identifing which furler brand. http://mywebsite.register.com/db1/00...s/DSCN4723.JPG |

As it happens on a re-rig today came across exactly the same injury, it was from a GOIOT furler...Really, really old one...Am i right?? Whats my prize? and what a heinous bearing setup right inside the drum, anyone else had any experience of these furlers??
|
no wrapstop
I have seen this type of problem when the patented Profurl wrapstop is not installed correctly - usually too loose on the stay. There is often the black bearing residue left on the stay.
I have sailed half way around the world with a profurl (put on in Tahiti in 1984) and the unit has never missed a beat. Install any unit correctly and they usually do the job intended. Thanks for the game. David |
people have also sailed around the world in little canoes. anything is possible, but the argument should be - what is safe ?
