As it happens on a re-rig today came across exactly the same injury, it was from a GOIOT furler...Really, really old one...Am i right?? Whats my prize? and what a heinous bearing setup right inside the drum, anyone else had any experience of these furlers??

no wrapstop

I have seen this type of problem when the patented Profurl wrapstop is not installed correctly - usually too loose on the stay. There is often the black bearing residue left on the stay.
I have sailed half way around the world with a profurl (put on in Tahiti in 1984) and the unit has never missed a beat. Install any unit correctly and they usually do the job intended.
Thanks for the game. David
